Ms Jiang told The Straits Times that on the day of the accident, the roads were wet after a heavy downpour.

She shared that her husband was waiting to turn at the T-junction of Ang Mo Kio Street 23 and Ang Mo Kio Avenue when suddenly something had hit the rear end of the vehicle.

“I heard a loud banging sound and was unsure what happened next. My husband lost consciousness briefly but after tapping him a few times, he woke up,” Ms Jiang told The Straits Times.

She said she immediately checked up on her husband and child to ensure they were not bleeding.

Soon after, the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were alerted to the accident, and when they arrived Ms Jiang handed over in-vehicle camera footage to the police.

Photos of the accident which were first posted on website Stomp showed the damaged back of the car and an SMRT taxi’s front part crushed.

Family sustained injuries

Ms Jiang and her husband were rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) while their son was taken to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Her husband spent a day in the hospital while she and her son underwent outpatient treatment for bruises and abrasions.

Ms Jiang claimed that her son has not been able to sleep well since, due to trauma from the accident.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Car Safety Tips

Car accidents might seem like they happen without any warning, but parents can ensure their families’ safety by following these tips:

  • Buckle up

Ensure everybody in the car has their seat belt on. Many studies have shown that seat belts are responsible for saving 329,715 lives in the last 50 years.

  • Know their place

Children below the age of 12 years old should always be seated in the rear seat or in an appropriate child seat or with the vehicle’s seat belt.

  • Secure gear

Ensure there aren’t any loose odds and ends in the car in order to prevent further damage and wreckage if you happen to be in an accident. Also, do not stash anything heavy behind the rear seats, instead put them on the floor.

  • Make sure children use a proper car seat that it’s installed correctly

A properly installed car seat is your child’s saviour as it ensures his/her safety even in an accident. So make sure the child seat is secured by following the instructions on the car seat’s manual.

  • Never text and drive.

Always resist the temptation to read and respond to any messages, no matter how important it is.

Stay safe parents and do follow these tips.
